Interchange is the Wholesale cost that all banks must pay through a Visa, MC network. Interchange+ means that we pass through our Wholesale cost that we are getting charge. The "+" is a simple flat fee for all the services we render.

How It Works
It is very simple. Both Visa and MasterCard publish the Wholesale Interchange charts. They reflect every possible cost for every card types. There are over 300 categories, but usually only about 10 categories apply to most businesses.

To determine a rate you just need to find the card type in the Interchange tables and add the discount rate.
Example:
Visa Debit (0.95% + $0.20) + Discount Rate (0.30%) = 1.25% + $0.20
Historically only the larger merchants with the most negotiating power were able to get Interchange+ Pricing because of the savings that results by having a wholesale direct cost. These accounts usually can only be granted by direct merchant services providers with Interchange being the Whosesale cost all banks must pay through Visa, MasterCard Network.
